We will be holding our next round of auditions in 2023!
How do I audition?
Let's get into how this whole thing works, we want to help you as comfortable as possible, so please contact us through the "Contact" navigation page if you have any questions!

WHAT IT WILL LOOK LIKE
When you first walk into your audition, you'll probably see 4 or 5 current members of Stocktones! These will include a member of each section, who will sing with you in the group singing portion of the audition. We'll have a piano set up so that we can lead you along in vocal warm-ups. We want to make sure that you're comfortable, and we can ensure that no other auditionees will be present when you are auditioning.
WHERE IT WILL BE
There are two locations that you’ll need to know for the audition process!
Our regular rehearsal room, the Choral Rehearsal Hall. It can be found along Brubeck way right behind Faye Spanos Concert Hall, outlined in black on the campus map. This is where the open rehearsal will be, as well as all future rehearsals! The building across the small courtyard is Buck Hall. This is where your audition will be, and it is marked red on the map. Posters around campus will detail specific rooms, so be on the lookout each year! |
WHAT IS IN THE AUDITION
The audition will consist of 4 parts and last around 15 minutes. Those parts are as follows:
- Vocal Warm-ups and Range Test: We want to hear your range and tone so we can best place you among our current members! This part is also about shaking the initial jitters off, so we'll lead you through it.
- Rhythm Test: These will be some simple call and response clapping rhythmic tests, just to see if you've got some groove to you, no stress!
- Solo Singing: We ask you to prepare around a minute of a song you love, or a verse and a chorus. We want to hear you sing what you like to sing, so don't worry about it being too showy or not showy enough. We are listening for expression and stage presence, so really try to embody whatever it is you’re singing!
- Group Singing: We will ask you to learn a portion of a group song. Although this doesn't need to be memorized, we ask that you give it some time and attention! We want to hear you blend with others, and get into the mood of the song chosen.
And... What comes next?
After your audition, you'll get an email shortly after confirming or denying your acceptance into Stocktones! If accepted, you will receive our first meeting times, and information on dues and purchasing your Stocktones digs.
YOUR SECTION
When you are accepted, you'll be placed in a section! Which consists of the four voice types (Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass). However, this doesn't mean you can't solo! Songs will be chosen with our members in mind, and you'll likely get your time to shine! It is expected that sections get together to have sectionals at least once per week, to make sure your section is as solid as possible.
YOUR EXPECTATIONS
Beyond your section, you also matter as an individual. A Cappella requires tight-knit member to member communication, both in harmony and rhythm. First off is punctuality! The sooner everyone is at rehearsal, the sooner we can get some quality work done. We expect you to work on your parts individually, and to come forward if you'd like to solo! We want to see you taking notes during rehearsals, asking questions if you have them, and to offer suggestions to make us sound even better. We assure you that if you work hard, the performances will be even more rewarding and fun.
